Subsequently emigrating to Canada, he married Miss Ellen Evoy Condie in Webbwood, Ontario, on 10 August 1910, but was tragically killed less than a year later on 4 June 1911 in a boating accident when fishing in the Georgian Bay- a bad squall came up and the boat capsized, killing all on board.
