An insurance inspector by profession, he enlisted on 17 January 1938 for war service with the Engineer and Signals Depot, Paddington, New South Wales. In late 1941, McIver began to feel unwell, and, upon close medical inspection, was advised that he was suffering from acute tonsillitis.
