Frederick Cyril Knight was born in Essex on 7 April 1886 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 22 October 1901. Advanced Able Seaman on 11 May 1905, he was posted to the destroyer H.M.S. Chelmer on 2 December 1914, and was killed in action whilst ferrying troops ashore during the Gallipoli landings at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915. He was the Chelmer’s only fatal casualty that day, and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
