Frederick Gardner was born in Dudley, Lancashire, on 1 January 1885. He attested at Toronto on 10 November 1915, and sailed from Halifax in the S.S. Olympic on 31 May 1916, serving in France with the 3rd Infantry Battalion. He was discharged at Toronto on 23 April 1919.
