Edward Walker Williams was born in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Yorkshire, in 1876 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Haverfordwest on 1 March 1900, having previously served in the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, Welsh Regiment. He served with the 30th (Pembrokeshire) Company, 9th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 14 March 1900 to 8 July 1901, and was discharged on 7 August 1901, after 1 year and 160 days’ service.
