Bir Singh was killed in action at Darbar on 16 September 1897 whilst attempting to move up the Mamund Valley and take control of the long ridge towards Shahi Tung. Initially sniped at from well-concealed positions, the 35th Sikhs faced a series of desperate engagements as swarms of the enemy attacked on both flanks, aided by a sudden thunderstorm and downpour.
