William Brown was born in the Parish of St Francis, Dublin, and attested there for the 14th Regiment on 16 July 1860, aged 20. He was discharged at York on 12 July 1881, having served in New Zealand from February 1861 until the end of the war in 1866, and afterwards in Australia until March 1870 when he departed Melbourne for England.

Sold with copied discharge papers which confirm New Zealand medal and a detailed biography of his service in New Zealand and Australia.
