Andrew Sloan was born at Ballybay, County Monaghan, and attested there for the 2/14th Regiment on 23 March 1858, aged 18 years 2 months. He transferred to the 2/18th Regiment (No. 2245) on 24 August 1869. He was discharged on 26 November 1878, after 5 years 11 months service in New Zealand, and 3 years 10 months in Australia.

Sold with copied discharge papers which confirm New Zealand medal and a detailed biography of his service in New Zealand and Australia.
