Adam Spelman attested into the South Lancashire Regiment on 21 September 1906, after earlier service with the 6th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. After service in India, he transferred to the Army Reserve on 30 December 1912. Recalled for Great War service, he served with the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front from 14 August 1914 before transferring into the Cheshire Regiment on 11 August 1915.
