Joseph Churchman was born at Market Deeping, Lincolnshire, and attested for the 57th Regiment at Peterborough in 1858, aged 20. He served with them throughout their posting to New Zealand, arriving there in January 1861, and returning to England in July 1867. He is shown on the roll as being an Orderly Room Clerk in 1869, and was discharged in the rank of Colour-Sergeant on 13 October 1871.
