William Sharkey was born in the Parish of Chudleigh, near Lifford, County Donegal, and attested for the 57th Regiment at Omagh, County Tyrone, on 29 September 1857, aged 24. He served abroad at Malta for 2 months; in the East Indies for 2 years 7 months; in New Zealand for 6 years 7 months; and in Ceylon for 4 years 8 months. He was at various times promoted to Corporal, but on three occasions was reduced to Private for being drunk on duty. He was promoted to Corporal again in August 1877, and claimed his discharge at Colombo, Ceylon, on 16 August 1878, being finally discharged on 15 October 1878.
