A Great War ‘Battle of the Somme’ M.M. group of four awarded to Private J. Shaw, West Riding Regiment (Territorial Force), who gallantly dug out wounded men under heavy shell fire

John Shaw served in France from 15 April 1915 and was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving with the 1/7th Battalion, West Riding Regiment, Territorial Force. According to the Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 19 October 1916, Shaw earned his MM alongside two ‘pals’ from the West Riding Regiment, 2489 Sergeant J. Lynn, and 1482 Private F. Waterhouse: ‘For gallantry near Thiepval on September 17, 1916, in digging out, under heavy shell fire, wounded men who had been buried.’

Shaw is further noted as wounded by the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on 11 January 1917.
