Alexander Sneddon attested for the Highland Light Infantry and served with the 16th (2nd Glasgow Pals’) Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 23 November 1915. He was killed in action during the attack on Thiepval on the first day of the battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916 - of the 25 officers and 755 other ranks from the Battalion who went over the top that day, only 5 Officers and 221 other ranks were still standing when the battalion came out of the line on the evening of 3 July. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
