In 1945 there were concerns that some of these notes (the $1 and $5 of 1940) could reappear in circulation following the capture by the Japanese of the SS Automedonn in 1940. The British Military Government correspondingly overprinted some notes to prevent their being used, and destroyed the million of others left over in 1946.
