Kings of Northumbria, Æthelred II (Second reign, 844-50), Styca, Eadwine, Gp Ci, edilred e around pellet, rev. eadvini around cross, 1.08g/7h (Pirie 1218, same dies; SCBI Lyon –; N 188; S 865). Reverse struck slightly off-centre, otherwise very fine, very rare £50-£70

Eadwine is a known moneyer in the Northumbrian series, found working in Eanred’s Phase I coinage. The chronological gap between that issue and Æthelred’s second reign requires that this is probably not the same moneyer. In CKN, Pirie suggested that the reappearance of Eadwine’s name on Æthelred’s coinage was an ‘islolated occurrence of irregularity’.
