Eastern Roman, gilt-bronze brooch, 3rd century AD, crossbow variant, 7cm x 3cm, short arched bow with a returned foot decorated with ribbing; the side knobs are almond shaped and deeply grooved, part of a chain is attached to the head loop (cf. Hattatt 1399). Very fine but head knob missing, rare £40-£60
