309598 Acting Leading Stoker John Ching, Royal Navy, was born in Dartmoor, Devon on 14 November 1887. He was killed in action on 1 January 1915 when the battleship H.M.S. Formidable was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-24. He was the husband of Martha Ching of 14 Glocester Road, Phillip Lane, West Green, South Tottenham, London. His name is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent. Sold with a folder of copied research on the Formidable and her loss.
