Ronald Stewart was commissioned a Lieutenant in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on 12 June 1895 and was appointed Captain in 1901 and Captain & Honorary Major in 1906. He was awarded the T.D. (London Gazette 2 September 1910) as Captain & Hon. Major in the 6th (Renfrewshire) Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
With the outbreak of war, he was recalled for service, 1 September 1914, with the rank of Major. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 1 May 1915. Major Stewart assumed command of the 6th Battalion on 14 November 1915 and was listed as Senior Major of “B” Company, Battalion Headquarters on 30 May 1916. Appointed Town Mayor of Neuville St. Vast on 3 June 1916.
