Professor Thomas Stapleton (1920-2007), paediatrician; served in the Royal Army Medical Corps, 1944-6, reaching the rank of Captain; Director of the Institute of Child Health, University of Sydney, 1960-83; Secretary-General of the International Paediatric Association, 1965-74. The Friendship Award is China’s highest award for foreigners.
