Alfred William Stock was born in Buriton, near Petersfield, Hampshire, in 1879 and attested for the Hampshire Regiment at Portsmouth on 17 January 1900, having previously served in the Regiment’s 3rd Volunteer Battalion. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 16 March 1901 to 13 May 1902, and was discharged on 12 June 1902.
