Charles Richard Wilkins was born in Landport, Hampshire, in May 1842. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in 1857, and served with H.M.S. Volcano from May 1857 to May 1859. Wilkins advanced to Captain’s Steward in November 1861, and to 1st Class Assistant to Ship’s Steward, General Mess in January 1872. He served with H.M.S. Euphrates between September 1870 and May 1876, and advanced to Ship’s Steward in January 1873. Wilkins returned for service with the Euphrates from December 1876 to August 1881, and then July 1882 to May 1884. After service with H.M.S. Crocodile, Wilkins retired in February 1894 after 37 years’ service. He resided in Portsmouth.
