Robert Lucas was born in Plymouth, Devon, in March 1835. He joined the Royal Navy as a Butcher in March 1856, and served in this rate throughout his entire service career. Lucas served with H.M.S. Iron Duke from July 1878 until March 1882 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in April 1881), and was shore pensioned in June 1882.
