Robert Wedell Brown was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, in January 1864. He joined the Royal Navy as a Engine Room Artificer 4th Class in May 1885, and advanced to Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class in April 1898. Subsequent service included with H.M.S. Pomone from May 1899 to December 1901 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in September 1900). Brown was Invalided ‘Insane’ in February 1903.
