Ben Proll was born in Burnham on Sea, Somerset, in 1879 and attested into the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry in January 1898. Transferred to the Reserve in June 1900, he was recalled three months later and served in South Africa during the Boer War. He died in Neath, Glamorgan, in 1908.
