Walter Tout, a farm labourer from Thurloxton, Somerset, was born in 1872. He attested into the Somerset Light Infantry on 14 August 1890 and served in South Africa during the Boer War with 2nd Battalion, having earlier served in India during the Mohmand expedition of 1897. He was discharged on 13 August 1902 and attested into the Army Reserve on 7 July 1903 before his final discharge on 6 July 1907.
