William Langton was born in Manchester, Lancashire. He attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers at Bury in July 1894, having served in the 4th Battalion, Lancashire Militia. Langton served with the 2nd Battalion in the Sudan from January to October 1898, and as part of the Occupation of Crete in the same year. He also served with the Battalion during the Second Boer War in South Africa between December 1899 and September 1902. Langton was discharged on 17 July 1906, having served 12 years with the Colours.
