James Halsey attested for the 9th Regiment of Foot at Aldershot on 4 October 1870, and served with the 2nd Battalion in India and Afghanistan (also entitled to an Afghanistan Medal 1878-80 with clasp Kabul). He was discharged on 12 March 1884.
