Stephen Owen was born in Shepton Mallett, Gloucestershire, and attested for the 9th Regiment of Foot on 6 April 1809. He served with the Regiment in the Peninsula, and was wounded at St. Sebastian. He was discharged unfit for further service ‘in consequence of a fractured arm by musket shot at St. Sebastian’ on 6 April 1813.
