Joseph Ward was born in Brighton. A musician by occupation, he attested for the Royal Regiment of Artillery on 21 December 1882, aged 15 years, 3 days. With the Scottish Division Royal Artillery he served in India from 15 September 1883 to 20 December 1894, gaining the medal for service in Burma 1885-87. He received a gunshot wound to the left hand on 27 October 1889 as a result of an off-duty sporting accident. He was discharged after completing his period of service on 20 December 1894.
