Percy Richards was born in Sheffield on 1 July 1886 and enlisted for the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Nottingham on 2 May 1904, 66 days underage. He served in H.M.S. Fox from 17 May 1908 to 13 July 1910 (additionally entitled to a Naval General Service Medal with clasp Persian Gulf), and served for the majority of the Great War in H.M.S. Minotaur, including at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. He was demobilised on 22 April 1919.
