Claude Leslie Hamilton was born on 16 April 1863, and was first commissioned into the Army in 1882, serving initially with the Royal Munster Fusiliers and the Border Regiment, before transferring into the Indian Army in 1885. In 1889, he joined the 3rd Bengal Cavalry (Skinner’s Horse) and remained with that regiment throughout his career, finally commanding it in 1908 with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He served on the Punjab Frontier in 1897-98, in the operations on the Samana, in the Kurrum Valley, in the Tirah, and at the relief of Gulistan. Sold with a group photograph of the officers of the regiment and their wives, which shows Hamilton in uniform wearing the ribbon of his only medal.
