The Calcutta Light Horse, of fact and fiction. Alfred Donald Pickford was born on 20 May 1872, and educated at George Watson’s College and Fettes College, Edinburgh. He made his career in Calcutta, becoming senior partner of Begg, Dunlop & Co., Calcutta, and later Partner, Begg Roberts & Co., London. He was appointed Sheriff of Calcutta in 1920, a Member of the Legislative Assembly of India in 1921, and was created a Knight Bachelor in the same year. He was later Chairman, International Tea Market Expansion Board; Development Commissioner, Imperial Headquarters, Boy Scouts’ Association, and formerly Chief Commissioner, Indian Boy Scouts’ Association. Holder of the Kaisar-I-Hind gold medal, he was appointed O.B.E. in 1946. Sir Alfred Pickford died on 7 October 1947.
