Thomas Gilfoil was born in the Parish of St Mary’s, Greenock, Renfrewshire, and attested for the 55th Regiment at Westminster on 1 March 1852, aged 17 years six months. He transferred to the 81st Regiment in June 1853, being promoted to Corporal in March 1855, and to Sergeant in April 1856. He re-engaged at Jullunder in March 1863 and transferred to the 107th Foot, being appointed Colour-Sergeant the following July. He transferred to the Unattached List as Sergeant in August 1865 but, in March 1866, he was appointed Hospital Sergeant at Nynee Tal Depot, where he served until October 1873. Whilst at Nynee Tal he received his L.S. & G.C. medal together with a gratuity of £15. He was discharged at Secunderabad on 20 October 1873, stating his intention to reside at Nynee Tal. Sold with copy discharge papers.
