Augustus Heathcote Allenby was born at Halford, Warks., on 22 November 1862, and educated at Silsby and St Peter’s School, York. He received his first commission in the York and Lancaster Regiment, from the Durham Artillery Militia, on 23 May 1885, and was gazetted Lieutenant to the Indian Staff Corps in April 1887. He was posted to the 13th Madras Infantry and served in the Burma Expedition 1885-87, with the Upper Burma Field Force, 1887-89, and in the Chin Hills Expedition 1891-92, and received the Burma (sic) medal with three clasps.

He was promoted to Captain in May 1896, to Major in May 1903, and to Lieutenant-Colonel in May 1911. He retired in November of that year, having been in command of the 83rd Wallajabad Light Infantry since his promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel. Upon his return to England he at once offered his services with the New Armies, was gazetted to the command of the 7th Royal Scots Fusiliers on 3 June 1915, and left for France the following month. Lieutenant-Colonel Allenby was killed in action by shell-fire at Le Philosophe on 7 August 1915, and was buried in Mazingarbe Cemetery, Bethune.
