M.C. London Gazette 7 November 1918: ‘Lt. David Fleming, Sea. Highrs., attd. Arg. & Suth’d Highrs. It was largely owing to his vigorous and determined handling of the firing line that an attack was brought to a successful termination. After the death of the commanding officer he took over command of the battalion and carried on with the utmost coolness and initiative, exploiting to the full the successes gained.’

David Fleming enlisted into the Royal Scots on the outbreak of the war in 1914 and went to France on 24 February 1915. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant into the 4th (Ross Highland) Battalion (Territorial) Seaforth Highlanders on 24 July 1915, and promoted Lieutenant on 1 July 1917. He won the Military Cross, whilst attached to 1/5th Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, for an action at Bois de Boeufs on 29 July 1918. He received the French Croix de Guerre for the same action, presented in the field by General Nicholson, 34th Division, on 3 August 1918. After the war he served in the Territorial Army, as Captain and Adjutant, 5 Co. No. 2 Infantry Base Depot, in May 1940; Major & Camp Commandant, Army Camp, Inverary, in early 1941, and of No. 5 Transit Camp, Wushaw, in December 1944. Sold with various original documents and five postcard photographs.
