William Scott was born in Carlisle, Cumberland. He enlisted into the 26th Regiment of Foot in January 1807 and was transferred to the 95th Regiment in December of that year. As a Corporal he served in Captain J. G. McCollough’s Company, 2nd Battalion 95th Foot during the Waterloo campaign. Scott joined the 4th Royal Veteran Battalion on its formation at York in November 1819 and served with them until its reduction in May 1821. At his discharge in 1821 an officer wrote of him, ‘... he conducted himself in a manner highly becoming the character of a good and attentive soldier to his duty, and recommends him to the notice of any Gentleman who is willing to employ a trust worthy man’.
