Francis Henry Plumtree was born on 1 September 1827. Studying surgery, he became a M.R.C.S. and a L.S.A. in 1850. Entering the Indian Army, he was appointed an Assistant Surgeon on 4 August 1855. With the artillery, he served in the Persian campaign 1856-57, being present at the capture of Reshire and Bushire. He then served in the Indian Mutiny 1857-58, being present in the operations in Khandesh. Promoted to Surgeon on 4 August 1867, he next served in the Abyssinian War of 1868. He attained the rank of Surgeon Major on 1 July 1873 and retired on 26 May 1874. He died at Newton Abbott, Devon on 17 April 1906.
