India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Naga 1879-80 (Surgn. J. O’Brien, 44th Bengal N.I.) nearly extremely fine £500-600

Joseph O’Brien was born on 8 January 1844. Educated at Queen’s College, Cork and Ledwick School, Dublin, he gained a M.A. in 1869, M.D. in 1870 and was appointed M.R.C.S. in 1869, L.R.C.P. and S.Ed. in 1870. Appointed an Assistant Surgeon in the Indian Medical Service in 1870, he was promoted Surgeon in 1873. As such he served in the Naga Hills with the 44th Bengal Native Infantry during 1879-80 and was present at the action of Konoma. Promoted Surgeon Major in 1882, he was appointed F.R.C.S. Edinburgh in 1887. Appointed Brigade Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel in 1896, he retired on an extra pension on 19 August 1898. O’Brien died at Instow, Devon on 29 December 1921.
