George Smith was born in India on 24 July 1828, the son of a British officer and was educated at Stoten and Mayer. Entering the Indian Army, he became a Cornet in the 2nd (Bombay) Light Cavalry in November 1847. Promoted Lieutenant in May 1849 and Captain in January 1858, he attained the rank of Major in December 1858. He was appointed Second-in-Command of the Poona Irregular Horse in August 1854. He resigned this position in January 1858 to act as Interpreter to the Field Detachments of Artillery and the 19th Native Infantry in the Khandeish Districts, north of the Taptee. In May 1858 he was Interpreter to the 2nd Light Cavalry. The medal roll states that he was entitled to the medal only but he may well have been entitled to the clasp. Sold with some copied research.
