James Randall Clothier was born at Whitstable, Kent and enlisted in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps in January 1900. He subsequently served out in South Africa in No. 1 Section of No. 1 Special Reserve Company of the K.R.R.C. from March to September of the same year.
