Kenneth Amber North was born on 12 July 1891 and was commissioned into the Indian Army on 18 January 1911. He joined the 32nd Sikh Pioneers on 4 May 1913 and remained with this unit (later 2-3 Sikh Pioneers) until the Pioneers were disbanded in 1933. During the Great War he was attached to the 34th Sikh Pioneers from January 1917, returning to his own unit at the end of hostilities. He served in the operations in Iraq, June 1916-April 1918 and then with the Egypt Expeditionary Force from 18 April - 31 October 1918. For his services in the Great War he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Military Cross.
In February 1933 he transferred to the 5/8th Punjab Regiment as Company Commander and was appointed Commandant on 30 July 1935. He retired when his tenure of office came to an end on 30 September 1938.
