John Bergin was born at Birr and enlisted in the 49th Regiment at Templemore, Co. Tipperary in March 1848, aged 18 years. As verified by his service record, he went on to serve in the Crimea for nearly two years, where he was present at Alma and Inkermann, and in the operations before Sebastopol, and where, too, he gained promotion to Sergeant in August 1855. Bergin re-engaged for a further 11 years while stationed on Barbados in February 1859, was advanced to Sergeant-Major in October 1862 and transferred to the Unattached List in March 1868, when he took up his appointment at the Aboo Sanitarium. He was discharged in February 1870 at the termination of his second period of limited engagement.
