Alexander Edward Pelham Burn was born on 18 January 1855. He was commissioned into the 68th Foot on 21 September 1874 and was promoted Lieutenant a year later. Arriving in India in 1875, he was appointed to the Bengal Staff Corps in July 1878. Appointed to the 27th Bengal Native Infantry in September 1879, he served in the Afghan War of 1878-80, being appointed Adjutant in March 1880. Promoted Captain in September 1886, he was made Wing Commander and Second-in-Command of the 27th N.I. in August 1887. With his regiment he served in the operations of the 4th Brigade in Burma, 1886-87 and then served against the Isazai in 1892. Burn served in the operations to relieve Chitral in 1895 and was promoted Major in September 1895, becoming Second-in-Command and Officiating Comandant of the 40th (Pathan) Regiment of Bengal Infantry in 1896. He was appointed Second-in-Command of the 33rd Punjab Infantry in May 1901 and Officiating Commandant of the 14th (Ferozepore) Sikh Infantry in August the same year. In September 1901 he was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel and served with the China Field Force, 22 September 1901-25 August 1902. Appointed Commandant of the 33rd Punjabis in March 1903, he attained the rank of Colonel in June 1905. Retiring from the Indian Army on 28 June 1906, he died in Richmond, Surrey on 20 February 1907.
