Three: Shoeing-Smith William Ball, 9th Lancers

Afghanistan 1878-80, 3 clasps, Charasia, Kabul, Kandahar (1199 Sg. Smith, 9th Lancers); Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880 (1199 Shoeg. Smith, 9th Lancers); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (1199 Pte., 9th Lancers) pitting from star, otherwise nearly very fine (3) £600-700

William Ball served in “A” Troop in Afghanistan and was recommended for the L.S. & G.C. medal on 1 January 1890. The Musters show that he was still serving in March 1888 but unfortunately the series does not go beyond that date. He is listed as Farrier Sergeant from January to June 1888, when he was reduced to Shoeing Smith. The absence of discharge papers suggests that he may have died on service.
