Arthur James William Borroff was born in 1898 at 19 Paragon Place, Blackheath, London. In 1914 he joined the Civil Service as a ‘Learner’ with the General Post Office. Early in 1915 he applied to join the Royal Flying Corps and was formerly enlisted on 27 May. The R.F.C. arranged for him to continue his studies which he had begun with the G.P.O. and in August 1915 he gained his Certificate of Proficiency in Radiotelegraphy. Shortly afterwards he was despatched to France, posted to No.16 Squadron as a Wireless Operator. Later in the war he was posted to H.Q. 12 Wing in Northern France. He was discharged on 14 March 1919 and returned to work with the G.P.O., attaining the position of Superintendent. Borroff retired in 1958 and died on 17 May 1977.
Sold with a quantity of original paperwork, including: Certificate of Transfer to the Reserve; Protection Certificate; Certificate of Proficiency in Radiotelegraphy; Certificate of Employment during the War; City and Guilds Certificate in Magnetism and Electricity and four original photographs. Also with copied service papers and summary of career.
