Samuel Crutchley (Critchley in papers) was born in the Parish of Randwick, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, and enlisted into the 3rd Foot Guards at Bristol on 11 December 1813, aged 26, for unlimited service. Critchley served in Lieutenant-Colonel Douglas Mercer's Company at Waterloo.
