William Henry Stokes was born on 30 June 1908 and was commissioned Pilot Officer in the Administrative and Special Duties Branch of the Royal Australian Air Force on 2 June 1941. Promoted Flying Officer on 2 December 1941, and Flight Lieutenant on 1 April 1943, he was discharged in the rank of Squadron Leader on 31 January 1946. In civilian life he was a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
