Daniel Charles Evans Grose was born in Gwalior, India, on 30 March 1874. Appointed Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, Derbyshire Regiment, in 1895, he served during the Boer War as a Captain in No. 9 Company, Army Service Corps, and rose to the rank of Colonel during the Great War.
