Richard Barnet (also recorded as Barnett) was born in Chatham, Kent, on 25 March 1860, and joined the Royal Navy as Ship’s Steward Boy on 28 March 1878. Posted aboard Superb 30 December 1881, he was awarded the Egypt Medal and Khedive’s Star and was raised Ship’s Steward 3rd Class in H.M.S. Wye on 15 September 1884. Advanced Ship’s Steward aboard Royal Adelaide, Barnett served at home throughout much of the Great War and was latterly discharged from the R.N. Barracks at Devonport on 28 February 1918, after 40 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Royal Navy.
