Clarke attested for the 20th (County of London) Battalion (Blackheath and Woolwich), London Regiment on 8 December 1915, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 1916. He was discharged on account of wounds on 25 November 1918, and was awarded a Silver War Badge No. B51339.
